You may have seen that many new agers put a 'k' on the end of the word 'magic'. You may or may not, however, know why.
Much like spelling 'woman' as 'womyn' in an effort to equalize the way the sexes are viewed, 'magick' is the new agers' way of attempting to make a distinction between what they/we do and the sleight of hand type magic you may be used to seeing in Vegas.
Honestly, I still spell it without the added 'k'. The way I see it - magic (or the belief in it's power, if you don't personally believe it is real) has been around far longer than illusionists have been magicians. So, why should it have to change it's spelling to accommodate making that distinction?
A quick look at the dictionary will still give you the definition you want for the word. So, I'm going to steer clear of that extra 'k' I think! I'm going to let 'magic' stay the way it's been. If illusionists seek to make a definite distinction - let THEM change the spelling to suit themselves. I see no reason too.
Of course, with all that said, I'll likely still wind up spelling it with a 'k' now and then, because I know there are a good deal of people out there who were raised by a parent on a neo-Pagan path, who spelled it with a 'k', and I do want to make sure that they know that I'm completely clear on the distinction they are attempting to make with that addition.
HOWEVER... that won't be too often.
